Student Perspectives: Making the Most of a Summer Internship

MS Finance, Economics, and Financial Statement Analysis ‘24 student, Mrudula Satish Wagle, shared with the GCMC how she made the most of her summer internship, leading to a full time offer and a decision to pursue further education in finance.

Agility is one of the most important things I have learned at my job. Adapting quickly and effectively to changing circumstances has been crucial in meeting the demands of a fast-paced work environment. This skill has allowed me to remain flexible and proactive in finding solutions, ultimately enhancing productivity and achieving optimal outcomes. Additionally, agility has enabled me to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and successfully navigate through various assignments.

Networking at work is crucial for individual growth and career advancement. As a Summer Intern, I had the opportunity to build relationships with my colleagues, who were friendly and supportive. Constant interactions with them allowed me to understand various roles and responsibilities within the company. In particular, my interactions with the Vice President were influential as we had discussions about my progress in the assigned tasks. He provided invaluable guidance and advice, which benefited my learning during the internship. By the end of my internship, I was offered a full-time role within the company, which was a direct result of the networking and meaningful connections I established during my time there.

In my role, I ensure that I put my best effort into every task assigned to me. Moreover, I actively seek out opportunities to improve processes and automate tasks, with the aim of providing my manager with a better view of the situation. One example of this is my creation of a customized dashboard, which has helped to streamline our data analysis and reporting, ultimately contributing to more effective decision-making within the team.

After this work experience, I am eager to pursue further education in finance by studying for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program along with my Masters. I aim to deepen my understanding of various aspects of finance, including investment management, financial analysis, and portfolio management. The CFA program will provide me with the expertise and credentials essential to excel in this dynamic and competitive field, and I am excited about the opportunities it will create for my future.

My advice for the Zicklin students applying for internships is to set goals and be consistent. Also, it can be beneficial to broaden their scope and consider positions that can bring them closer to landing their dream job. Additionally, utilizing the resources available through Baruch’s career center to seek guidance on drafting cover letters and resumes, as well as receiving support for navigating the job application process, will significantly enhance their chances of securing a valuable internship opportunity.
