Student Perspectives: Building Connections Can Change You
MS Information Systems, Data Analytics student Prakriti (https://www.linkedin.com/in/prakriti-ac/) shared with the GCMC about how making connections at work has made a difference in her career.
What has been one of the most important things you’ve learned at your internship?
The most important thing that I’ve learned through my internship is building meaningful connections. Connections help with your individual growth and even confidence. Asking questions and reaching out to people for help has always been hard for me, but I’ve learned to seek help - even among my fellow interns - which has helped me tremendously. I realized that it doesn’t make me any less deserving than others, but rather makes it a collaborative and healthy work environment.
How have you approached networking at your internship? Share any one specific example that has been impactful for you.
I have! For example, I used the company directory to reach out to coworkers who had similar roles like mine and ask for a one-on-one meeting to learn about their career journey. I had a one-on-one with the VP of Cloud Security and got to learn about her career journey. She was one of the few women in technical security back in the day, while being a single mother. Her story was very bold and impressive.
What has been your biggest contribution to your team at your internship? Why?
Being a new member of the team, I brought a unique perspective on how some things could have been done in a different way. I had recommended taking a different approach on creating reports for our monthly metrics meetings to make it more efficient and detailed, and it was taken into consideration. My manager recognized it as feedback during my performance evaluation at the end.
After this experience, what would you like to learn next?
I would like to explore more on Cloud security, specifically Microsoft Azure. Being part of the technical security team and getting that exposure on how pipelines are built, my interest has piqued. My next goal is to get certification as a Cloud Security Analyst. I’ve already started taking an advance Python class as a first step towards my goal.
For students having a difficult time finding an internship, what is one piece of advice you would give them?
I would say, please do not give up. There will be a lot of rejections and it can take a toll on you at times, but you only need one yes. And don’t stop until you hear that. It is easier said than done, but trust me I’ve been there. Now I love where I work and very excited to see what the future holds for me.
