Student Perspectives: Interning in Finance

Suhail Mohammed (MS Finance) shares with the GCMC about his previous experience interning in finance.


What has been one of the most important things you’ve learned at your internship?

I have learned many things in the internship from modeling to how to evaluate companies. But the main part of our job is deal making, which requires us to understand people and try to make sound arguments that can move things positively for the company. The most important thing I leaned in the internship is how to communicate effectively with people and minimize conflicts on achieving a goal/deal.


How have you approached networking at your internship? Share any one specific example that has been impactful for you.

As someone who had struggled with networking, I do two main things to help with networking in a new office: 

  • One, bring something small you’re passionate about to the office. I enjoyed soccer, so I bought a small soccer ball so when someone would pass by, they would ask about it/kick it and start a conversation. Before that, I love food so, I kept a basket of candy on my desk. People enjoy connecting over each other’s passions.
  • Two, ask people questions. About themselves or ask them for help on some report. It builds familiarity among people and they will be more comfortable starting conversations with you.


What has been your biggest contribution to your team at your internship? Why?

I believe my biggest contribution to the team has been my ability to do research. When raising funds for a company, we have to submit detailed, 80-150 page reports covering why someone should invest in a company. Making these reports requires compiling and simplifying massive amounts of information.


After this experience, what would you like to learn next?

I would like to learn more about operating companies. Learn how to run a business and source new businesses.


For students having a difficult time finding an internship, what is one piece of advice you would give them?

There is a great quote by Arnold Schwarzenegger “work like hell and advertise.” I would recommend students to work hard on your technical skill, really understand the fundamentals and then, market yourself not only by networking, but also think of other ways to show your skills, knowledge and passion in other ways, such as maybe writing a blog or recording a podcast.
