What has been one of the most important things you’ve learned at your internship?
One of the most crucial lessons from my internship is that while technical skills are undoubtedly essential, the ability to communicate effectively and work seamlessly in a team is equally vital. In the financial realm, where precision is paramount, having not only the technical expertise but also the ability to convey complex concepts with clarity has been a game-changer.
What has been your biggest contribution to your team at your internship? Why?
My most impactful contribution to the team goes beyond the technical intricacies. Recognizing the pivotal role of effective communication and a positive work environment, I've dedicated myself to fostering a cohesive and uplifting team dynamic. I firmly believe that a positive attitude is contagious, and I strive to bring this energy into the workplace daily.
In recognizing the significance of organization, I make a conscious effort to communicate transparently with my colleagues. Whether I'm in the office or out for the day, I ensure that my work is easily accessible.This not only streamlines collaboration but also enables my colleagues to pick up where I left off, fostering a sense of seamless continuity in our tasks.
A defining aspect of my internship has been identifying areas for improvement and contributing suggestions for enhancing efficiencies in application processing and review. Recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, I gained confidence in suggesting ideas for optimizing operational processes that ultimately enhanced collaborative dynamics.
In my interactions with professionals in my field, I understand the importance of directing them to the right resources. In doing so, I contribute to a more streamlined and efficient workflow. This not only enhances the client experience but also ensures that tasks are handled by the most qualified individuals. It contributes to the overall efficiency and success of all our efforts.
How have you approached networking at your internship? Share any one specific example that has been impactful for you.
Approaching networking in this environment extends beyond the confines of my desk. I've taken it upon myself to foster connections by initiating casual conversations in the lunchroom or on the office floor. Simple yet genuine introductions, where I inquire about the roles and tenure of colleagues, have proven to be powerful in building relationships. Engaging in lighthearted communication has allowed me to forge connections with colleagues from various departments and expand my professional network.
Moreover, recognizing the importance of inter-company relationships, I actively participate in meetings with different insurance carriers. These not only provide valuable insights into the industry but also serve as great opportunities for networking. Meeting professionals from similar fields who work in different companies has broadened my perspectives and enriched my understanding of the intricate workings of the financial services sector.
I’ve also extended my networking efforts beyond the office walls, such as attending happy hours near my workplace. These informal settings create a relaxed atmosphere, allowing me to connect with individuals working on different floors, with whom I might not have encountered during regular work hours. These interactions have not only expanded my professional circle but also enriched my understanding of the diverse roles within the firm.

This internship has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. Beyond the realm of career development, I've garnered valuable insights into the intricacies of financial markets. Operating software such as FINET and Excel has become second nature.

For students having a difficult time finding an internship, what is one piece of advice you would give them?
A golden rule that has guided me in life is that you only need one "yes" for your life to change. For me, this mantra underscores the importance of perseverance and not giving up, especially when faced with the challenges of securing an internship. Beyond online applications, don't hesitate to take a proactive approach. If you have the opportunity to hand in your resume in-person, seize it. Dedication and a belief in self are fundamental to success. Also, treating the job search as a full-time commitment is key.
For students navigating the competitive landscape of internship opportunities, my advice is to recognize that technical skills are just one facet of skills required in the job market. While honing your technical skills is crucial, equally vital is to practice and refine your communication skills. Employers today seek individuals who not only excel in their designated tasks but who also contribute positively to the workplace.
