What to Do This Summer if You’re a Student and Don’t Have an Internship

By Dr. Lindsey Plewa, Deputy Director of the Graduate Career Management Center at Zicklin School of Business

If you’re panicked because you have not yet secured a summer internship, you are not alone.

The good news? You can still make progress on your career goals. Note: this is especially important for those hoping to make a career change after graduation.

Here is a timeline of (free) things you can do this summer to continue making progress.

JUNE: Gain Experience Through Projects

Complete a virtual project related to your field of study (audit, tax, investment banking, project management, etc.). The benefits? You get a better sense of what certain careers actually entail. You can list it on your resume as a project. You increase your confidence in a technical area. You become a more competitive candidate.

Here are some platforms that offer such opportunities:

JULY: Set a Networking Goal and Achieve It

Set a goal to meet 10 new people in your desired career or industry. Here are some ways to accomplish that:

AUGUST: Meet a Career Coach to Update Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Book an appointment with a GCMC Career Coach to strategize how best to update your resume and LinkedIn profile. For example, you may want to:

  • Add a “Related Projects” section that highlights your technical skills

  • Add a “Professional Development” section that lists the organizations you joined

The benefits? The Career Coach can ensure that the bullet points you have written will be understood by any recruiter or hiring manager, that they represent you in the most favorable way, and that they are targeted towards the job you want.
