Student Perspectives: Persistence Resulted in an Internship Focused on Credit Analysis
MS Finance ‘26 student, Dojin Jung, shared with the GCMC his internship experience doing credit and financial analysis.
What has been one of the most important things you’ve learned at your internship?
One of the most important things I learned at my internship is the role of a credit analyst. To illustrate, credit analysts examine borrowers’ financial performance and creditworthiness. In addition, I learned the factors that banks focus on in credit analysis. Banks measure creditworthiness through debt-to-equity ratio, earnings before interest depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), interest coverage ratio, and debt service coverage ratio.
How have you approached networking at your internship? Share any one specific example that has been impactful for you.
I approached networking at my internship by participating in an event in 2024. The internship networking event impacted my leadership skill as a mentor. Many students approached me to ask about my role and work. One of the students was really interested in my position and asked a lot of questions. Some of the memorable questions that I got were: what factors are important? Do you use python? What software do you mostly use when you do credit analysis? I did not expect that the students would be really interested in my role.
What has been your biggest contribution to your team at your internship? Why?
The biggest contribution to my team at my internship was financial analysis. There are no team members who have knowledge of financial modeling. I was the only one who could handle financial modeling. Specifically, financial projection is one of the essential factors to measure companies’ creditworthiness. The financial modeling skill that I have is the biggest contribution to my team at my internship.
After this experience, what would you like to learn next?
After this experience, I would like to develop further my financial modeling skill using technical tools such as python and studio R. I have entry level programming skills. If I learn these skills, I will analyze creditworthiness fast and determine credit rating using a lot of data.
For students having a difficult time finding an internship, what is one piece of advice you would give them?
Keep trying to submit your resume! I was also one who had a difficult time finding an internship. I faced discouragement in the past when trying to find an internship. However, what’s important is to never give up and to keep applying to companies with persistence and consistency.
