Student’s Perspective: My Internship Journey with UNIS Athletics

By Javier Gambara

As a master’s student in Marketing, specializing in Digital Marketing and social media, my internship as a Digital Marketing & Social Media Assistant at the United Nations International School (UNIS) Athletics Department has been transformative. I support the Girls Varsity Tennis team and assist with departmental logistics during Fall 2025. Here’s what I’ve learned, how I networked, my key contribution, my next goal, and advice for internship seekers.

Key Lesson Learned

The biggest lesson is that effective marketing requires operational efficiency. Coordinating facility bookings and parent logistics ensures smooth tennis team operations, allowing me to create compelling website updates and social media content. This synergy maximizes the team’s visibility and engagement.

Networking Approach and Impactful Example

I network by engaging colleagues during practices and sharing marketing ideas. A standout moment was pitching a live Instagram Story for match highlights to Daniel O’Connor, the Athletics Director. He invited me to present my metrics at a department meeting, boosting my confidence and opening doors for future collaboration.

Biggest Contribution and Why

My top contribution is a system blending logistics and digital marketing. I created a shared calendar for bookings and parent updates, reducing conflicts, and grew the tennis team’s Instagram by 20% (projected) while enhancing the UNIS athletics website. This improves efficiency and visibility, strengthening UNIS’s community and reputation.

What I Want to Learn Next

I’m eager to master advanced data analytics using tools like Google Analytics to optimize campaigns. This skill will help me drive measurable results in larger sports or nonprofit settings.

Advice for Internship Seekers

Tailor your applications to stand out. I secured my role by including a sample Instagram post with my application, showing initiative. Leverage your network—professors, peers, or alumni—and personalize your outreach to highlight your unique skills.
