Students Working with the GCMC: An Alumnus Perspective

Image
Kamyar Rahnemoon , MBA Marketing, Management and Finance      As a student and now alumnus of Zicklin School of Business, I jumped at the opportunity to engage with one of its invaluable resources, the GCMC! The team was always available and eager to help me build my career path.            Early on, I connected with Tanuja, who challenged me think more about what aspects of my job I enjoyed and why. Her goal was to help me understand what motivated me. As a result, I became more confident when asking for additional responsibilities at work and expressed more interest in learning about different facets of the organization.            Soon after graduation, I connected with Lindsey, who gave me valuable career advice and helped me understand my MBTI assessment. Lindsey helped me realize some of my true strengths and gave me real-world examples of how to apply them in a professional ...

Students Working with the GCMC: 2022 Baruch Virtual Tech Expo

Image
Riad Rehman , MS Business Analytics, Data Analytics I attended the Baruch Tech Expo on April 26, 2022. Over 10 firms from various data-intense sectors presented. The ratio of representatives-to-students was notably high.  The event was comprised of 3 rounds of breakout sessions. Each session had 1-2 firms presenting. Each firm had 1-3 representatives present.  The presenters were very engaging. Each presenter referenced roles that were actively hiring. A focus of the breakouts was getting into the details of the firms’ hiring process and what their hiring managers are looking for (e.g. certifications, relevant experience, demonstration of a passion in Business, etc.). The Baruch Virtual Tech Expo was a great opportunity for students to learn exactly what firms are looking for today. Students Working with the GCMC: Unlocking Hidden Potential

Image
Dean Gavindane , MBA’23 Unsurprisingly, The GCMC assisted me in building my resume, coaching me for job interviews, and helping me create a strategic plan to navigate a variety of MBA conferences. Of course, that is a common practice of any academic institution's career services, but the GCMC differs in that they go beyond coaching; they empower me. As a result, I left every meeting with a level of confidence equal to that of a comic book hero. So it was no surprise that I received an offer from a top fortune 500 company. "When confidence aids competence, there is no door that won't open." GCMC is the place to go to unlock your hidden potential. Students Working with the GCMC: Making Invaluable Connections

Image
Raymond Adda ,   MBA '22 The GCMC has been a great resource for my career development since I started my MBA program. Coming into the MBA program as a career switcher, GCMC provided me the professional guidance I needed to make a successful career change. These ranged from providing me information about the recruitment process in my area of specialization, working with me to enhance my resume and LinkedIn profile, to having mock interviews. These helped me put my best foot forward in my job applications and networking activities which culminated in multiple internship and fulltime offers.  The GCMC has also connected me with recent graduates and professionals, and such connections have proven to be invaluable. The GCMC has always opened its doors to me on any professional issue I have had. I have had help from GCMC on how to stay in touch with my professional network, how to assess job offers and what to look for in potential employers. When it comes to my professional develop...

Students Working with the GCMC: Successful Job Search

Image
Michael Monzillo , MS '22 The GCMC has made a key difference for me in my job search. Before I approached the GCMC for help, I spent 6 months applying for great jobs that appeared super exciting. I tried using advice from blogs about how to write a cover letter and how to structure my resume. However, without any strong professional connections and without a clear understanding of how to target my writing towards what recruiters were looking for, my applications fell short. In those 6 months, I earned myself one interview.  Shortly after the semester started, I started meeting regularly with Jennifer Seidman , a career advisor, and attending many of the networking opportunities hosted by Justyn Makarewycz , a relationship manager. As I met with Jennifer, she helped me to understand how best to market myself in my resume and cover letters. She was always available to meet with me and would look over my writing to make sure my applications were as strong as they could be. I also sta...

Alumni Working with the GCMC: Continuous Career Guidance

Image
Alexandra Villamar , MS '16 Throughout my career journey and as a Baruch alum, I have leaned on the support of Zicklin's GCMC. It was no different during my relocation to NY (during COVID), where I sought Baruch's professional career services to re-develop and establish a network back home. Working with career counselors Jennifer Seidman , Jack Pullara , and Justyn Makarewycz has allowed me to reestablish confidence in my career development. Utilizing the GCMC's resources, I successfully moved from job seeker to a happily employed professional.   The office has offered a myriad of services, including Myers-Briggs self-assessment, a deep-dive into Strengths-Finder, thorough resume and cover letter reviews for both writing support and building clarity around my goals and value, practicing my delivery in mock interviews, gaining insight from interview debriefs, and finally strengthening my negotiation conversations and offer reviews. I have received great value from the...

Students Working with the GCMC: First-Semester Success

Image
This week, we sat down with Saloni Patel (MST ’23) to learn more about her internship search this semester. Saloni is a first-semester student who secured multiple offers, accepting offers with CBIZ, KPMG, and Withum for internships in the coming semesters.   Hi Saloni! Thanks so much for chatting with us. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?   Of course! Currently, I am a first-semester grad student in the Masters in Taxation program here at Baruch and I did my undergrad in Accounting from Queens College. At the moment, I am interning at a non-profit as a Finance & Accounting Intern. In addition, I am also the AVP for ZTAX and Assistant Treasurer for Graduate Ascend.   It sounds like you’ve had a busy first semester! How has the transition to Baruch been overall, be it classes and keeping up with recruiting?   Getting adjusted with a hybrid situation was a bit tough as I travel a long distance both ways and especially since ...
